What you can do to help yourself and others with this huge problem!

There is strength in numbers and documentation is extremely important!

This issue will wind up in court.  Having documented evidence and specific records for your attorney is critical.  This information includes who they will need to get depositions from.

Contact one of the attorneys on the right side of every page, or on the "Attorney's" page, who may be able to provide you with help.  Tell them you found them on pistonslap.com.

If you wish to deal with GM yourself I might suggest:

bullet

#1 – Taking your vehicle into a GM dealerships at least 3 times with the piston slap complaint.  Strike up conversations regarding previously promised GM fixes, the size of the issue, number of vehicles they see with the complaint, how can metal to metal impact not be causing damage or wear, do they personally have a knocking GM vehicle, if they did what would they do and etc.  Make sure they document your problem for what it is, piston slap, and what they plan to do about it, which will be nothing...

bullet

#2 – Call the GM Customer Assistance Center (phone number in the back of your owner’s manual).  Document the entire discussion, your case number, name of employee and date.  Ask some questions as at the dealership.  Probe into earlier GM promises to fix vehicles, ask for everything in writing (you probably won’t get it) and if need be  ask to speak with supervisory personnel.

bullet

#3 – Begin getting engine oil analysis performed on your vehicle and analyzed by a third party laboratory. (This will cost you about $20)

bullet

#4 – Get a compression test and bore scope inspection performed on your engine.

bullet

#5 - Get an ASE certified mechanic to listen to your engine and determine if he/she believes there is an issue inside your engine that should not be there given the number of miles the vehicle has been driven.  Ask the mechanic to document his/her findings on the work order.  You can probably get this done for $25 or maybe for free.  You may be able to add the compression test to this for another $75.  A bore scope inspection added to this will probably run you another $150.  However, not all garages/mechanics have a bore scope.

bullet

#6 – Go to three different used car lots to get an appraisal of your vehicles value first hand without the engine knock.  Let the appraiser know about the engine knock and ask him if the vehicle would be worth any more if the engine were repaired so that the knock did not exist.  Keep records of everything (name, date and specifics of the conversation).  Ask the appraiser to document his determination.  If he is reluctant to do so explain it is only an appraisal of market value and not an offer to purchase your vehicle.  Offer to pay him $20 for his appraisal services.

bullet

#7 – Spread the word.
